Unusual Awakening by S.M. Knowles freebie book blitz

Title: Unusual Awakening
Author: S.M. Knowles
Genre: Young Adult Blitz
Host: Lady Amber's Tours
Book Description:
With tears and a tight hug, Rylee Everley’s dad left for Afghanistan with the Army Reserve. Since his deployment, her mom has been distant, her sisters are constantly fighting, and Rylee, at only thirteen years old, has to be the glue to keep them together. While her mother stays locked in her room, Rylee has been forced into the role of parent.
Now, two years later, a freak accident involving a bus at school promises to restore some normality to her family. In spite of not knowing how their father is, her mother is happy and her sisters don’t seem to fight as much as they used to. Rylee herself is seeing more of her friends and is even trying to sort out her own feelings about Brock Parker. However, something dark threatens to disrupt that normality for personal gain, and that darkness is willing to break every rule to get what it wants.
S.M. Knowles was born in Elmira, New York where she was swept away in a whirlwind to the Land of Oz—Independence, Kansas. Her parents were relocating for working opportunities and decided that this would be the perfect place to start new roots. Little did she know that this place would contribute to the inspiration for the first book she wrote in her Rylee Everley Series.
While growing up, S.M. would travel the roads around her house while imagining she was somewhere else. Her imagination would take her everywhere, making the long hot summer days seem shorter throughout her fantasies.
At the age of twelve, she decided to write her first book. Filled mostly with dialog, she filled up one-hundred pages, front and back. After taking the book downstairs to show her mom, and persuading her to buy her more paper, she excitedly ran back to her room. As she barreled through the door, S.M. tripped over items left on her floor, and her papers came raining down in her room. Discouraged, she stood there in tears, picking up her papers and throwing them in the trash. Her work had no organization, no numbers on her pages, just a child fulfilling a joy that she would put down and not pick up again.
When she became older, she joined the military for something different. In that time, she was able to explore many places and even met her husband in Iraq. After coming home, she started her family in Arizona and went back to school, earning a Master’s degree in Adult Education and Training.
Getting up, I walk over to the tree line. I don’t see anything around, so I grab a rock and throw it to scare off any animals. Walking in further, I call out, “Hello?” Everything is quiet. I wait a few more seconds. Something feels off. Walking in a little further, I hear a branch break. I know I didn’t step on anything, so something’s unquestionably out there. “Who’s out here?” I yell. A big oak tree stands directly in front of me, right next to him. “No, no, no, no,” I beg.

Nick and Tesla's Robot Army Rampage blog tour and giveaway

Nick and Tesla's Robot Army Rampage by  Bob Pflugfleder and Steve Hockensmith:
In this second novel of the Nick and Tesla series, the precocious brother-and-sister duo find themselves solving another baffling mystery.  As the story opens, their Uncle Newt takes a consulting gig at a cut-rate amusement park, engineering animatronic figures for a cheap Hall of Presidents knockoff.  One perk of the job is that Nick and Tesla have unlimited access to the amusement park all summer long—but the kids quickly discover that one of the park employees has a sinister plan.  They’ll have to build a few robots of their own to foil him! Readers are invited to join in the fun as each story contains instructions and blueprints for five different projects. Learning about science has never been so dangerous—or so much fun!

Steve Hockensmith:
Though the town elders of Louisville, Ky., have yet to acknowledge it with so much as a single commemorative plaque, Steve Hockensmith was born in the Derby City on August 17, 1968. The first two decades of his life passed uneventfully, the only notable highlight being a short stint as an intern at People magazine, an experience that allowed Hockensmith to realize his lifelong dream -- crank calling Crispin Glover.
Despite (or perhaps because of) such lapses in his professionalism, Hockensmith became an entertainment journalist, writing about pop culture and the film industry for The Hollywood ReporterThe Chicago TribuneNewsday and lots of magazines and newspapers you’ve never heard of. Sensing that print journalism was going the way of Raphus cucullatus, however, Hockensmith switched to an industry that he knew would offer dependable stability for decades to come: publishing.
Hockensmith is not known for his business acumen.
Nevertheless, his first novel, the Sherlockian mystery/Western Holmes on the Range, was a finalist for Edgar, Anthony, Shamus and Dilys Awards in 2007. Four sequels followed: On the Wrong TrackThe Black DoveThe Crack in the Lens and World's Greatest Sleuth!.

In 2010, Hockensmith tried his hand at romzomcoms (romantic comedies with zombies) withDawn of the Dreadfuls. Though a prequel to the hit “mash-up” Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Hockensmith’s novel was 100% original. Well, 100% new, anyway. Most of the characters and settings came courtesy of Jane Austen, who’s been a real doll about the whole thing and hasn’t complained yet. In March 2011, Hockensmith completed the PPZ trilogy (yes, it's a trilogy now) with the novel Dreadfully Ever After.
Hockensmith is launching two new series with the help of collaborators. He's writing the Nick and Tesla middle-grade mysteries with the help of gadget-building maestro "Science Bob" Pflugfelder. And The White Magic Five & Dime (due this summer from Midnight Ink) is an adult mystery with an occult twist thanks to the help of tarot reader supreme Lisa Falco. Hockensmith thinks it likely that he'll write books on his own again one day, but acknowledges that maybe now he's been spoiled by all the help.

Though he considers himself a Midwesterner at heart, Hockensmith currently lives in California’s Bay Area. He says he’s adjusted to life on the West Coast, but confesses that he still misses thunderstorms, snow and Long John Silver’s Seafood Shoppes. He shares his home with the perfect wife, the perfect daughter, the perfect son and a slightly imperfect dog.

Bob Pflugfelder:
"Science Bob" Pflugfelder has been a fan of science since he was just six years old. Over the years, he has been exploring the scientific world with thousands of students. He also encourages parents and teachers to practice "Random Acts of Science" by providing instructions and videos for interactive science experiments on his web site, as well as public presentations and workshops that help make science come alive.
Bob has been featured on television including recent appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Dr. Oz Show, and Live With Kelly & Michael. His experiments have also been featured in several magazines including People, Popular Science, Disney's Family Fun, and WIRED magazine.
Bob has spent a lot of time over the years teaching students working on movies and TV shows. He found it was a lot of work setting up labs at studios, so he purchased an ambulance and turned it into his own traveling mobile science lab! He would take it right to the movie and TV studios to teach his students. His students have included: David Gallagher, Michelle Trachtenberg, Jonathan Lipnicki, Hillary Duff, Frankie Muniz, Haley Joel Osment, Tahj Mowrey, Dylan & Cole Sprouse, and many others.
Bob continues to teach science outside of Boston while he develops experiments and videos to share with his website visitors.

Review Copy Cleanup 4.0 Week Two Wrap up

This week didn't go nearly as well as I wanted it to. I got into a reading slump that I haven't managed to quite get myself out of yet. Hopefully this upcoming week will be better. I only managed to read two review books, and start a third. I have mini reviews for these on my Goodreads page. The full reviews are scheduled to post later this month. Here are the books I've read.

I enjoyed this, and thought it was a great end to the series. I'm really hoping Alyson Noel writes a spinoff series.

This was a cute picture book. Almost like a Where's Waldo for younger children.

This is what I am currently reading. I thought that it would take me about 24 hours to get through, because that's how long it took to read the first book. I was definitely wrong. I've been reading it for about five days now. I didn't realize how big it was. I just finished the first part of the book, and am now obsessed with the Borgias. I'm hoping to have this done by the middle of next week.

After I finish Infinite Devotion, I'm going to read a few smaller review books to catch up with my goal. How are you doing with your Review Copy Cleanup? Have you read any of these books? If sp, please leave a comment and let me know what you thought.

The Replacement by Rachael Wade blog tour

Synopsis:
The Replacement by Rachael Wade
Publication date: January 27th 2014
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult

Synopsis:
*Contains sexually explicit content and mature subject matter, including language and elements of abuse.*

A gritty New Adult drama about a young woman’s self-destructive quest to find purpose, self-worth, and love in a broken world.

My name is Elise Duchamp. I’m twenty-three years old and I’m known as the town whore.

No, not the kind who exchanges sexual favors for money. The other kind. The kind who gives it all away for free, whenever and however she likes. I am that girl. The one everyone whispers about and the one none of the girls seem to like, because all of their boyfriends either want to sleep with me or already have. Promiscuity is my thing—the kind that slowly, violently turns my insides black, but gives me something I need.

All things considered, I’m not completely reckless. I’m safe, and contrary to popular opinion, I do have a heart. I live in a world of careless choices, and with those choices come careless people. I cannot judge them, because I am one of them. I too bow down to the altar of the self-serving. I am not a good friend. I am not and never could be anyone’s girlfriend. I’m convinced any goodness in me shriveled up and died long ago.

But I am a replacement. That is something I know how to be, and this is a story of the lengths I’d go to in order to keep it that way.

Rachael Wade is the Amazon bestselling author of The Preservation Series, The Resistance Trilogy, and the upcoming sci-fi series, The Keepers Trilogy. Here is Rachael to tell us a bit about her Dream Cast for The Replacement:

Okay, so let me start by saying… it’s so, SO insanely hard to cast characters. Just ask any writer, and they’ll tell you. We have very specific ideas in our heads of what these people look like. It’s been a bit easier in the past with some of my other books, but The Replacement is my baby. It’s my favorite thing I’ve written to date, so the task feels especially impossible. I just can’t google these people.
That being said, I’m going to cheat a little here. These cast picks were sent to me by Heidi from My E-Literate Obsession book blog. She’s on my street team. And man, did she nail the cast. These picks just so happened to be phenomenal choices. I absolutely love them.  Oddly enough, she casted Chace Crawford as Nate, and that was exactly who I pictured for Nate when I was writing the story. So, no, this isn’t MY dream cast, but I definitely approve!
Read the book and tell me what you think. Who would you choose? I love seeing different cast choices!

About the author:
Kristen Ashley grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana, and has lived in Denver, Colorado, and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multigenerational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland, and Kristen grew up listening to the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Whitesnake. Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music and love was a good way to grow up.  And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

Excerpt:
“Sometimes,” Chace started, and his tone was cautious, “girls like her, girls like she used to be who turn into girls like she is now, get a guy’s attention, a good-lookin’ guy like that, and they can go—”
Deck cut him off. “Chace, you know Emme. You know that’s bullshit. She’s always known her own mind. And she’s always been cool. Even when she wasn’t a knockout, she wasn’t that kind of person.”
“It’s been years, Deck,” Chace reminded him. “A lot of them. People change, and it isn’t lost on either of us she has in a big way.”
“Yeah, and I just met her on the street. I’m havin’ dinner with her tonight and she looks good, man, but she acts the same. And her man is a dick but he’s also a moron. So he’s no boss,” Deck declared and looked at Shaughnessy. “And you just got yourself a maverick.”
The mood in the room shifted. It had been alert. Now it was relieved.
Shaughnessy was the only one who didn’t want Deck stepping in.
The rest of them, after all they’d seen for the past few years, wanted this done, and they were willing to take risks to get that.
“Terrific,” Shaughnessy muttered, his eyes moving through the room.
“Decker, this needs to be discussed,” Douglas stated, and Deck looked to him.
“You want me on the team, we talk money. I’ll give a discount, see this shit sorted. I’ll want a full brief. I’ll want the entire file. I won’t take orders. I’ll keep you in the know of what I do and what I find. But, just sayin’, that woman means something to me.” He threw out a hand toward the whiteboard. “So even if you don’t put me on the team and pay me, I’ll still be seein’ her clear of this shit.”
“You can’t let her know we’re investigating her boyfriend,” Carole said swiftly.
“This isn’t my first rodeo,” Deck returned. “What’s goin’ down, I wouldn’t fuck your investigation. But she’s still clear and she’s clear in no more than a week. Not months. Not as long as it’ll take you to track this crew, the way you’re goin’, and stop their shit.”
“As contract to this task force, you cannot engage in illegal activities. We can’t prosecute with fruit from the poisonous tree,” Douglas told him.
“Again, not my first rodeo,” Deck replied.
“You have a crew or do you work alone?” Henry asked.
“This, I’ll be bringin’ in my crew,” Deck answered.
“They’ll all need to see me,” Douglas stated. “Contract is signed, you all work for my department until the case is done.”
Deck nodded and his eyes went to Chace. “Want a picture of that board, want the file.”
“Deck, not sure this is a good idea. You got a conflict of interest with this—”
Deck again cut Chace off. “This is Emme.”
“I know it’s Emme,” Chace shot back, concerned for Deck and losing patience because of it. “Until just now, I had no idea you’d react the way you have when you saw it was Emme. So Emme’s the goddamned conflict of interest.”
“You know her,” Deck whispered, also losing patience, and he watched his friend’s face. Definite concern but also indecision.
He knew Emme.
Chace went from the academy into Carnal’s Police Department and stayed there but that didn’t mean Deck didn’t spend time with Chace throughout all Deck’s travels. Chace had met Elsbeth. Chace had spent time with her. And with Elsbeth came Emme. So Chace had spent time with Emme too.
“Her change is remarkable, Deck,” Chace noted again. “That’s something to take into account.”
At his words, Deck felt the ghost of her fingers digging into his shoulder through his coat. Saw the dimple. Heard her call him honey.
And he knew her history. Elsbeth told him. He knew what she’d survived. He knew what made her what she was.
He didn’t know what made her what she was now, but he was going to find out at dinner.
Last, he knew Emme would not be a part of a crew who burgled homes across an entire county and recruited high school students to do it. Not for the attention of the likes Dane McFarland. Not for money. Not for power. Not for anything.
“She’s up first. I investigate her. Clear her. Then clear her of this shit,” Deck stated.
“You work that with me,” Chace returned.
“Suit yourself. But dinner with Emme tonight is just her and me.”
Chace studied him.
Deck took it then looked to Douglas. “You got a file for me?”
“It’ll be delivered to your house by three thirty,” Douglas replied.
“Contracts will be emailed to you by then. My crew will be in tomorrow at eight to be deputized,” Deck replied.
“You gonna be with them?” Douglas asked.
“Wouldn’t miss that shit for the world,” Deck answered, cut his eyes through the people in the room, noting Henry Gibbons looked amused, Mick Shaughnessy looked annoyed, Carole Weatherspoon looked reflective and Chace still looked worried.
Then he walked out of office, out of the station and to his truck.

  EXCERPT:
“You got a visitor, Tess.” He rested his chin atop my head, which caused my pulse to try
to outrun my heart. “Two of them to be exact.”
“Okay.”
There was a pause. “Are your eyes closed?”
“No.”
His chin slid off my head and then his chest rumbled as he laughed. “Your eyes are
closed.” He laughed again. “Open them up.”
Cursing under my breath, I pried one eye open and then jerked against him. His arm
tightened. “Oh wow …”
The black-and-white horse was the closest, standing mere feet away from me. The brown
one wasn’t too far, shaking its head and making soft snorts. My eyes were wide as they bounced
between the two creatures. “They’re not carnivorous, right? Because at their size, they could eat
me.”
Jase laughed deeply as his hand shifted up, resting in the center of my stomach, just
below my breasts. “Horses do not eat people, you little idiot.”
I started, eyes narrowing. “There’s always a first.”
The lips pulled back on the black-and-white horse as if it was smirking at me.
“This one right here? Mr. Friendly? Jack calls him Bubba One,” he said in a quiet,
calming voice. But air hitched in my throat when his thumb moved in a slow circle over the thin
material of my tank top, hitting against the wire in my bra. “And the brown one is Bubba Two.”
Mouth dry, I wetted my lips. “That’s good for remembering names.”
He chuckled as his pinkie and forefinger started to move up and down, reaching my belly
button and then sliding back up. It was almost as if he was unaware of what he was doing, or the
electrifying response the tiny motions were dragging out of me. “I think so too, but his real name
is Lightning.”
Said horse shook his head, tossing the shaggy mane.
“Lightning seems to be a more suitable name,” I admitted, relaxing as the seconds
passed. Maybe that was his intention. Distract me with the soft, almost innocent touches. It was
working. “What about Bubba Two?
“Ah, the one who is staring at the pail like it’s the holy mecca of grain?” His cheek
grazed mine as I laughed. “That’s Thunder. And we’re going to feed them. Together.”
The friction his fingers created with my shirt sent tiny shivers up and down my back.
“With our hands?”
His answering laugh tipped the corners of my lips up. “Yes. With our hands.”
“After checking out the choppers on them, I’m not so sure about that.”
“You’ll be okay.” He slid his hand off my stomach and wrapped it around my wrist.
Slowly, he lifted my hand out in front of me. “Hold still.”
My heart lurched. “Jase—”
Lightning trotted forward and pressed his wet nose against my hand. I cringed, waiting
for him to eat my poor fingers. The horse didn’t. Nope. It nudged my hand as it whinnied softly.
He guided my hand up over Lightning’s jaw, all the way to the pointy, twitchy ears.
“See?” he murmured. “That’s not too bad, is it?”
I shook my head as my fingers curled along the soft coat. Lightning seemed to anticipate
the direction of the petting, pressing his long head against my hand as my fingers tangled in his
mane. It wasn’t bad at all.
Jase shifted behind me, and in an instant all thoughts of the horses evaporated. His hips
lined up against my backside, and I bit down on my lower lip as I focused on the white splotch
covering Lightning’s muzzle.
I could feel him—feel Jase. And there was absolutely no doubt in my mind that he was
affected by how close we were standing. That knowledge and the hard length of him left me
dizzy, just like it had done that Saturday night. An all too warm flush spread down my neck. In
the back of my head, I was rationalizing his physical reaction. He was a guy. Our bodies were pressed
together. If a wind blew on a guy’s private area, they got hard. So I should just ignore it,
but my body was so not on board with my head. My body was operating on a different playing
field. An ache centered low in my stomach. A sharp and sweet yearning raced through my veins.
“Not so scary, right?” His voice was deeper, richer. “They’re like dogs. Well, like a dog
that can carry around two hundred pounds, if not more.” Hand sliding off mine, he stepped back,
and the sudden emptiness of his body was like a cold shock. “Trust me.”
Then he smacked my ass.

Viper Girl Kicks Canadian Robottom by Tony Saylor

Synopsis:
Viper Girl’s been working too hard as a superhero. She's feeling the stress and she needs a vacation. What's the best place on earth for a peaceful, nerve-calming vacation? That’s right: Canada! Of course, this is Viper Girl we’re talking about, so it won’t exactly be a your run-of-the-mill, get-away-from-it-all escape. Even across the border, Viper Girl is going to have to kick evil’s ugly butt!

My Thoughts:
Viper Girl is slowly becoming one of my favorite children's books. It has a female main character, which girls like. It also has a lot of kick butt action that boys can appreciate. The adults might even be able to enjoy it, due to several geeky references in it. The Viper Girl series has something in it for everyone.

I think the third installment, Viper Girl Kicks Canadian Robottom was my favorite so far. The author has a great sense of humor. Most of the pages made me chuckle. I also like the subtle things that he added, such as the words on the Canadian flag, and the cover of the Dragon-Bot Operations manual.

The illustrations in Viper Girl Kicks Canadian Robottom are wonderfully done. I like that the author decided to keep the illustrations in color. It adds so much to the story and makes it more visually appealing. My favorite one was the illustration of Viper Girl eating the frosted coconut shavings on the way to Canada. I'm curious to know where she found a warm beach in Canada.

Viper Girl Kicks Canadian Robottom was a great book. It was a little over the top silly at times, but that's one of the reasons why I liked it. I recommend it for boys and girls, four and older. If the children can't read it by themselves, the parents can have fun reading it to them.

I give Viper Girl Kicks Canadian Robottom: 5/5.
