Synopsis:
A novel-in-verse following the journey of a transvestite performer and poet from childhood to adulthood. Filled with inner conflict, Valencia reflects on his/her life through poetry trying to understand the consequences of the choices we make.
My Thoughts:
Valencia was a good short read. It was inspiring. At first, I was a little confused as to what was going on, but it was pretty easy to catch on after a while. I liked that Valencia was an original story. There aren't a lot of stories about a cross dressing man trying to find his way in life. I also liked how it was written in poetry form. It reminded me a lot of Ellen Hopkin's writing, very gritty and raw. My only complaint is I wish Valencia was a little longer. I wanted more details. I'm curious to find out what happened to the woman after she left with her son. I also want to know what kind of man the son turned out to be. I liked Valencia, and will definitely be reading more of the author's work in the future. I recommend Valencia for fans of Ellen Hopkin's work.
